The Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT) has said that its Executive will consider revised proposals on the post-Croke Park proposals at a meeting scheduled for Friday afternoon (May 24th).
Specific amended proposals, discussed at talks involving all the teacher unions over the past 24 hours, under the aegis of the Labour Relations Commission (LRC), are expected to be presented in final drafted form later today or tomorrow morning. These will form the basis for IFUT’s further consideration of the issue, IFUT General Secretary, Mike Jennings, said.

“Neither the IFUT President nor I, as General Secretary, have given any commitment to the LRC regarding recommending these proposals for acceptance or rejection. I believe it is a matter for the Executive to decide on our next response, in accordance with the rules of IFUT, our existing mandates and our evaluation of what is in the best (or better) interests of our members.

“I await the formally drafted proposals from the LRC regarding the details of the new proposals before making any further comment.

I can say that they represent some improvement on the previously rejected document. However, I would not overstate this point and it will ultimately be for our members to decide if the improvements are sufficient to make a fundamental difference to our position and to alter the previous decision of the membership,” Mike Jennings said.
