The overwhelming public support for a fair resolution to the BIMM dispute—from students, opposition TDs, other trade unions, and indeed, the Taoiseach himself—has been instrumental in driving progress.
Since the commencement of industrial action last week, IFUT has engaged with key stakeholders, including TU Dublin, in pursuit of a just outcome. In addition, representatives have engaged with BIMM management, and some positive developments have emerged from these discussions, including:
- No roles will be made compulsorily redundant.
- Most significantly, staff will be offered the opportunity to remain on their current contracts with the same terms they currently enjoy.
While these are important steps forward, significant issues remain unresolved. As such, industrial action will continue as planned tomorrow, Saturday 15th January from 10 am to 12 noon, and IFUT has not yet revised its plans for further action on:
- Wednesday, 19th February
- Thursday, 20th February
IFUT Assistant General Secretary Robert McNamara commented:
“We remain hopeful that a resolution can be found, but key outstanding issues must still be addressed. Our members have shown remarkable solidarity, and their determination has driven the progress made so far. However, we are not there yet.”
Joe Wall, staff representative, added:
"It is expected that further discussions between BIMM and representatives will take place early next week."
IFUT remains committed to securing a fair and sustainable resolution that protects BIMM lecturers and ensures quality education for students.
