Mike Jennings, our former General Secretary, was designated a ‘Distinguished Associate’ of Education International (EI) at the organsation’s 8th World Congress, held in Bangkok, Thailand, in July this year.
Mike, who is currently Treasurer of the European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE), received the award in recognition and deep appreciation of the contribution which he has made to the development of EI and promotion and implementation of EI policies over many years. Mike has acted as liaison between IFUT and EI since working as General Secretary of IFUT.
Candidates for Distinguished Associate are selected by the Officer Board of EI, but must then be endorsed by its Executive.
In making the designation, EI noted that Mike had “worked tirelessly and diligently, and with tremendous commitment to assist EI and its staff, especially in the regions, to plan and implement the organisation’s policies and programmes.”
This position, which is confirmed only at EI Congress held every four years, is a tribute to Mike for his outstanding contribution to higher education policy globally and his dedication to promoting democratic trade unionism, human rights, core labour standards and quality education for all.
